Interesting Things Happening In The GSO

Welcome back to "Interesting Things Happening In The GSO!"

In my efforts to share knowledge, social networking tips, and good news I have been blessed to meet tons of people!

For those of you who are currently unemployed here are a few tips that I hope will help you:

1. If you have been volunteering at your church, or in outside organizations; create a volunteer section on your resume listing your duties and responsibilities.

2. On your resume most companies want it in paragraph format instead of bullet format, it uploads to a resume tracking system easier if there are no text boxes, or bullets.

3. In your objective, if you put one at all, be sure and include what YOU will bring to the company as well as what you are looking for.

4. Linkedin, Plaxo, Facebook are all great social sites however, building a strong network in your local community is paramount.

5. The formula for getting any job will include 25% required skills, 50% Attitude and 25% who you know.

As for Social Networking Sites:
Go to the link below for a list of social sites!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

As for who or what site is ranking the #1 Social Networking Site on the Internet....the winner is FACEBOOK!!! If you haven't checked it out do the research!

INTERESTING THINGS IN GSO

Welcome back to my blog and my posting now called "Interesting Things in GSO!" As I evolve abviously so will things that interest me.(SMILING)

I am still a huge advocate for social networking even though at times you can become overloaded with information, user id's etc. Here are some tips to help help make you more effective.

-There are a gazillion (is that a word), social networking sites and more forming every day. My suggestion is that you number it to one or two, and make sure they can integrate with a main networking site like facebook or linkedin.

-Seek out your main interest and things that you identify with such as "circle of moms", "meetup-Poetry in GSO", "Linking Greensboro". Here are three distinct networking groups that I can focus and identify with Moms, Poets, and professionals in Greensboro.

-It is very easy to forget a password, a log on and even an email. I can't tell you how many aliases I have LOL! Keep a spreadsheet of logons, passwords, emails this will come in real handy.

-I have a ton of folks in my network, but there is no way to truly keep up with them all, this can become a full-time job all by itself. So instead, group your people together by locations, professions, organizations in your contacts in MS Outlook. This has proven to be more efficient when it comes to networking.

There are networking events, and new meetup groups forming everyday. If you've got an idea and not sure how to implement let's talk about it.

THINGS THAT INTEREST ME!

Welcome to my blog! Over the years I have written about what it takes to get in the door to corporate america, Cisco's technology and search for hottest skills. Today I decided to write about things that interest me. Technology, all things creative (art, music, poetry, dance) and Education is really my areas of interest!

Please check out the links to see how technology, art and education have continued to come together to create the way we do business today.

Even as Recruiters we have to find new and innovative ways to find qualified talent, screen candidates and eliminate those who don't meet the basic qualifications.

With a river of candidates flowing, an additional 10-15 hours to the recruiters work week, both sides are seeking ways to minimize effort, save time and money.

That's why I love innovation and technology. Enjoy the videos, information and stay tuned for things that interest me.

Whether people want to explore virtual worlds or not they are becoming apart of the learning and development of high school students. This is a generation that will shape and change our world in the next 4-6 years.

Here in Greensboro, North Carolina there are programs being developed to introduce education virtually, by developing a virtual high school/ On "RezEd", the source for all things Virtual, they posted a story on "Avatars Enhance the Language Learning Experience" written by Laura Jacob of McGuffey High School; and the list goes on and on.

There are companies and organizations such as Cisco, IBM, Library Aliance and others that have found this form of media to be beneficial to their business, growth and development locally, nationally and internationally.

I've taken a personal interest in developing a forum and space for folks that enjoy all things creative. This includes Art, Music and Poetry.

If you are interested in learning more about virtual worlds and transforming your static network into a realtime social network, locally, nationally and internationally let's connect.

Poetry Initiative - The Poet's Brain

These maker of versus audible melodic flow are captured by the creative minds at the Poet's Brain. Here is an excerpt from an upcoming video project. See how the Arts Council in your city and state can utilize virtual worlds to shape the future of Poetry!

HOW TO TRANSITION INTO A NEW CAREER

I was at a local mixer here in Greensboro talking with a former Business Owner who made a move here looking to transition his knowledge, skills and ability into a stable sales executive role. He has over 30 years experience and really believed that it wouldn't be a problem for him to find a job. He has experience developing a successful firm, managing people, selling products and services; this should be a piece of cake right?

Well it's been over a year now and he has not been successful. Over the past year he has sold for a couple of small organizations whose processes and practices have a lot to be desired, not to mention their commission plans.

So after speaking with him and a dozen others who are faced with the same challenges;including myself - how do you transition your skills.

Well, most people are taking this time to pursue careers that they are passionate about oppose to going after positions for the money. Here are a few tips that can help you:

1. Join local associations and organizations in the industry you are pursuing
2. Go to your local college and take a Career Assessment
3. Join your local meetup or start a local meetup in your area of interest
4. Go to your local JobLink/ or Job retraining center that works with the ESC to
test your skills and get Career Ready Certified (this will evaluate your math,
english and ability to resolve problems)
5. Go back to school to get your degree, learn how to start a business

These are just a few options for you to consider. As I learn you will also.

Time For Change

Well I must say it's been a good run, 20 years in the recruiting and sales business. I have learned more than I expected, met people I would have never met, and have helped thousands of people.

I'd say my work is done. It's time for a change. The question is change to what? Since my contract ended with Cisco Systems, I have been here wondering what will I do next. Well lot's of people have been wondering what i've been up to. So I decided what better place to note that then here. Since the ending of my contract at Cisco Systems - RTP, NC, I have had lots of time on my hands. I have discovered that not only do I have lot's of interest, my network is ever growing, and this is the perfect time for personal development.

As some of you know, I now run an independent consulting business called Engage Strategic Recruiters. This has many different facets, here are just a few I'll mention:

1. Training and SOP documentation on best practices internal HR
2. Informational Presentations to High School, Trade Schools,on Technology, Web 2.0
3. Outsourcing on and offsite Recruiting and Sourcing
4. Strategic Sourcing, posting

If I can be of service in any of these areas, and of course the traditional contract recruiting, permanent placement, staff augmentation let me know.

Even if you can't utilize my services, tell me what you have been up to since we've last spoke. Being a part of a network is no good if you don't connect!

The Truth About Hiring - Industries Still Doing Well

Welcome Back!

As most of you may know by now the "Truth about Hiring" right now is that quite a few companies are not hiring right now. Whether the company financials last year were positive or negative, the sense of economic terror is still in the air. I wanted to share with you some truths about industries that are not only hiring but doing well.

Despite our country's current economy there are still some companies and organizations that had a great Q4 and are hiring in Q1.

When crisis comes what do people do? 1) the worry, 2) the start to panic, 3) then they get desperate and 4) make life changing decisions. Well there are tons of folks out there that know this and are counting on it.

Industries that are doing well are:

Food Industry
Studies have shown that during hard times, people tend to worry about how their families are going to eat, so they by their food in bulk.

Retail - Fashion
You know the old saying, "presentation is everything". When you are feeling down or bad about oneself you fix yourself up and you'll feel better. Cosmetics, beauty salons, local beauty supply stores, barber shops are making a killing.

Retail - Gaming and Movies
Parents are trying to find inexpensive ways to stay at home, save money and keep their kids entertain. In addition to the new family Wii craze, Redbox is doing well with their $1 DVD rentals

Higher Education - Universities and Accelerated trade schools
Many people that are being laid off have been in their jobs or profession for years, I've hear the statement, "This is all I know how to do" more than once. For those who didn't graduate college, their going back, or for those who don't have certifications they are going after these things to help them become more marketable. Look to the local university, community college or trade school in your area.

Healthcare - Biomedical, Pharmaceutical, Research
Even though technology industries are treading water as the economy debris clears, if you have a technical position do some research on the leading industries. Companies like Pfizer, Glaxo they are still hiring.

For open job postings I'm working on look at: http://esrllc.blogspot.com

We All Need Each Other Too Survive

Happy New Year! Some won't believe that it will be, but I'm optimistic! I believe that our economy may be changing rapidly for the worst but that doesn't mean that WE can't make some swift moves to help ourselves.

I recently heard a 91 year old man stand before a crowd of 2000 or more people and tell us how he and his family survived the "Great Depression" of the 30's; and he summed it up with four words - "We helped Each Other".

What a concept. I recently sent out a few Happy New Year salutations on one of my social networks, and boy did I get a great response! I mean I heard from Engineers, Developers, Architects, Project Managers, Business Analyst and the list went on.

Being currently unemployed for the past couple of months has caused me to be out of touch with my colleagues and network.

I was amazed at just how many awesome people I know. Some folks wished me and my family the best throughout the holidays, some inquired about jobs opportunities, some asked me how my job search was coming along. It dawned on me that the way we survive the economy is for me to help others and others to help me.

I want to encourage you to talk, I mean really talk to your network you might be surprised at what you can get help with and visa versa. Don't take your network for granted, we all need each other to survive.

If you are in a position to help someone please do so, ask them how are they "surviving the current economy" you just might be able to lend a hand.

Remember, it could be you tomorrow that requires help from another.
