HOW TO TRANSITION INTO A NEW CAREER

I was at a local mixer here in Greensboro talking with a former Business Owner who made a move here looking to transition his knowledge, skills and ability into a stable sales executive role. He has over 30 years experience and really believed that it wouldn't be a problem for him to find a job. He has experience developing a successful firm, managing people, selling products and services; this should be a piece of cake right?

Well it's been over a year now and he has not been successful. Over the past year he has sold for a couple of small organizations whose processes and practices have a lot to be desired, not to mention their commission plans.

So after speaking with him and a dozen others who are faced with the same challenges;including myself - how do you transition your skills.

Well, most people are taking this time to pursue careers that they are passionate about oppose to going after positions for the money. Here are a few tips that can help you:

1. Join local associations and organizations in the industry you are pursuing
2. Go to your local college and take a Career Assessment
3. Join your local meetup or start a local meetup in your area of interest
4. Go to your local JobLink/ or Job retraining center that works with the ESC to
test your skills and get Career Ready Certified (this will evaluate your math,
english and ability to resolve problems)
5. Go back to school to get your degree, learn how to start a business

These are just a few options for you to consider. As I learn you will also.
