2013 IT'S STILLYOUR MOVE!

Happy New Year!  Welcome back to my blog. My last post was so popular that even though we are in the new year, I am going to repost it.  So for those procrastinators, who waited until 2013 look for a new opportunity.  Here you go!

DECEMBER 2012 POST
The end of the year is near, and I say, "don't wait til' January to make a career move." I receive inquiries throughout the nation about job opportunities, advice on how to get a foot in the door, or assistance on crafting a better resume. On a regular basis hundreds of applicants are applying for (1) one job! How do you cut down on the competition then? I say, use the "Smitty Method", it works like a charm.

Smitty Method: Developed by H. Smith Sr., my dad. He is a bright, yet
simple man, whose education was minimal, but work ethic and principles
kept him employed for 35+ years. This is a four steps process:

1. Identify
2. Research
3. Plan
4. Execute

This 4-Step process, which I have adopted as "The Smitty Method", has assured my success as a working professional for the past 30 years. My dad, an avid gamer (dominoes, cards, ping pong, basketball, baseball, football) is highly competitive, and has taught me to always strive to be #1 no matter what the challenge and if you can't be number then be number #2 and let #1 know you were there.

Before you make your move, there are a few things you must understand about the hiring process. As a Recruiter, our job is to post openings, seek qualified applicants, screen candidates, interview, reference check and ensure potential hires are a technical and cultural fit. Throughout that list of tasks, we are making moves all day long.

As an applicant, you must know that the evaluation of your candidacy begins as soon as you make contact with the recruiter, apply online, email or inquire about a position. Don't make the wrong move and start without being prepared. I recommend using the Smitty Method, and going through this 4-Step process before you start; then make your move.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY - What you want to do?

You have to know what type of career you want before you start applying. Look at your resume, identify the trends: a) who you worked for, b) how long you worked, c) what you did, d) tools you used to do the job.

STEP 2: RESEARCH - Find out what it takes to be qualified

In order to convince others that you are the best match for a job, first you must adhere to the required qualifications. The Internet is a powerful tool, but so is networking and social media. Spend a considerable amount of time in this area: a) read multiple job descriptions on sites like Tangil Smith Blog, Linkedin or Indeed.com, b) use salary calculators and look at the cost of living for positions which you are looking to apply, c) look at the required skills: education, years of experience, industry experience, tools and software.

STEP 3: PLAN - You must decide the who, what, when, where and why

If you've played any sport or been a part of any type of team, you know that to win you must have a strategic plan. Who are your competitors? What type of position are you going after? When is the best time to engage the company? Where is the company, can you live there, where will you be in 5 years after you are hired? Why this job, why this company, why not; what are the pros and cons?

STEP 4: EXECUTE - It's your move, "Just Do It", says Nike!

Many people will get to this point and freeze. Fear over takes them with a million and one questions of, "What If!" Take Smitty's advice and I do quote, "study long, study wrong". The time to analyze was during Step 2 and Step 3, when you get to Step 4 it's time to take action.

Instead of giving advice or tips to a hundred prospective candidates individually, I decided to share this simple, yet valuable method that I have used for years. Many people that I have assisted over the years have benefited from the "Smitty Method". You may think that publishing such information will increase the competition, but the truth of the matter is everyone will not follow through.

Will you be the number one candidate? Do you have a method to follow? I've just made my move on the board, "It's Your Move!"

SEEKING STABILITY?

Hello to my faithful Blog Readers! I haven't written in a while because I've been "Really Busy"! The reorganization of the Volvo Group is progressing as planned and slowly but surely we are starting to ramp up on our hiring.   By maintaining a strengthened focus on our core business we have excelled this 2nd Quarter.

I talk with many applicants in a given week and I'm finding there is a commonality discussed in the interview, the phrase is "I'M SEEKING STABILITY" "I WANT TO WORK FOR A STABLE ORGANIZATION".
As I interview and talk with candidates, I'm hearing all kinds of stories of no merits, burn out, no promotions; too companies moving to less desirable weather climates, office consolidations and the list goes on.  One thing I have found to be true as well as others is, the Volvo Group tenure is long, passion is strong and stability is common song amongst those that work here.

We are extremely proud of our 2nd Quarter Earnings.  This is a sign of STABILITY AND GROWTH.  Take a look at our 2nd Quarter Earnings and tell me if you like what you see.
http://www.volvogroup.com/group/global/en-gb/newsmedia/_layouts/CWP.Internet.VolvoCom/NewsItem.aspx?News.ItemId=127910&News.Language=en-gb

Also we are ON THE MOVE in terms of innovation.  We are in a time where having "SMART" objects is a necessity.  The Volvo Group has created something called Volvo’s Human in the Loop (HITL) simulators connect a real-life operator to a simulated machine, filling the gap between maths and actual prototypes.

http://news.volvogroup.com/2012/07/26/teaching-machines-about-human-stress/

And there is so much more to look forward too within the Volvo Group; check out our open job opportunities at http://www.volvogroup.jobs and if you meet the basic qualifications of my "HOT JOBS OF THE MONTH", reach out to me and "Let's Talk!"

"Volvo Group NA Sales Rose 65%"

Volvo Feb Truck Deliveries Up 3% On Year, N Amer Sales Up 65%
Published March 16, 2012

Dow Jones Newswires

STOCKHOLM – Swedish truck maker Volvo AB (VOLV-B.SK) said Friday that group truck deliveries were up 3% in February on the year, but in individual markets North America sales rose 65% compared to last year.

MAIN FACTS:

-Group truck deliveries increased 3% to 18,395, from 17,862 last year.

-Deliveries in Europe fell 20% to 9,099 from 7,665.

-Deliveries in North America rose 69% to 4,668, from 2,827 last year.

-Deliveries in South America fell 21% to 1,728 from 2,175 last year.

-Deliveries in Asia rose 8% to 4,295, from 3,985 last year.

-Deliveries in other markets rose 33% to 1,605, from 1,210 last year.

-Volvo truck deliveries In Europe amounted to 3,077 trucks in February, down 18%. While continued uncertainty concerning economic development in Southern Europe continued to impact truck customers in certain markets, the picture is mixed, with favorable demand in many areas. Countries such as Germany, Poland and Turkey noted significant delivery increases in February, compared with January 2012.
-The Russian market has also continued to demonstrate healthy demand for trucks to date this year.
-Deliveries in South America declined due to planned production reductions in the wake of new emission requirements, which were introduced on January 1, 2012.

-In North America, February deliveries increased 45% to 2,364 vehicles in comparison with the same period last year. The increase was primarily a result of continued replacement demand.

-February deliveries for Mack totaled 2,583 vehicles, a 97% increase compared with February 2011. Though construction spending in the U.S. economy began to improve, the vocational truck market remains weak. To balance this, Mack continues to focus its sales efforts on the Pinnacle, its on-highway product, as well as the mDRIVE automated manual transmission.

-In February, Renault Trucks delivered a total of 3,868 trucks, down by 19% compared to the corresponding period last year.

-Deliveries from UD Trucks in February totaled 1,811 units, an increase of 14%.

As the official IT supplier to the Volvo Ocean Race, Volvo IT is on a mission to deliver a world-class IT platform for one of the world’s most extreme sporting competitions. The three winning Chinese IT students, that come from different parts of China, will get the opportunity to help implement , monitor, and support the IT infrastructure for the Volvo Ocean Race in Sanya. This includes helping to ensure live broadcast and the transmission of data when the sailing boats will race in the harbor area of Sanya on February 18th, 2012.

“Volvo IT in China delivers IT solutions to the Volvo Group and is expanding at a rapid speed in Asia. We have a big need to find and attract talented IT experts. We want to find those that communicate in English and enjoy working in global teams.”

The competitors submitted a creative story through text, pictures, or video, by using Weibo, a Chinese social media similar to Twitter or Facebook. The stories were judged by a panel of experts based on creativity, passion, and related IT experience. Ten candidates were invited for an interview and out of that the three winners were selected.

The winning students were: Ma Li from Tianjin University, Wei Ni Jun from Nanjing University of Technology and Liu Yuan Wei from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

“The Volvo Ocean Race stop in China will be a cultural melting pot that I’m sure the winning students will find very inspiring”, concludes Anders Dalmén.

WHO IS VOLVO 3P

Welcome to my blog. As you know by now I support multiple business units within the Volvo Group. Volvo 3P is one of them. I decided to highlight for you what some of the Business Units/Areas are about so that when you are seeking employment you will have a better idea of the culture and infrastructure.

As I look to increase our headcount, recruit solid industry professionals I will continue to provide YOU, the potential candidate with as much information as possible.

This information can be found via our website http://www.volvogroup.com/group/global/en-gb/volvo%20group/our%20companies/volvo3p/company_profile/Pages/Company_profile.aspx

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A company at the forefront
Volvo 3P’s mission essentially defines what we as a company intend to achieve:

“To propose and develop profitable products to ensure a strong competitive offer for each Volvo Group truck company, based on common vehicle architecture and shared technology.”

The Volvo Way is the foundation for building a competitive corporate culture. The Volvo 3P values, based on the Volvo Way are the guiding principles for the company´s operation. The values guide and inspire all employees in the daily operations and development:

•Driving Business Value and Innovation
•Teamwork across Functions and Cultures
•Organizational and People Development
We are organized in five synchronized functions responsible for product planning, product development, purchasing and product range management. Each function is represented at our various locations and applies global processes and methods.

Our scope
The complete truck tractor, minus the driveline, plus related services. This is our principal scope of supply.

This means that our expertise covers basically every field of vehicle engineering, including electrical and electronics engineering, as well as product strategy and supplier management.

We challenge…
…not only ourselves but also the truck companies we serve - all in order for each of the truck brands to develop its competitiveness in every market segment.

We are young
3 of 10 Volvo 3P employees are under the age of 34. Gender diversity is progressing positively and currently 1 of 5 employees is a woman.

We are global
We operate at eight geographic sites around the world. This of course opens an array of possibilities in terms of global career development for our employees.

Considering the size and niche of our company, it is fair to say that Volvo 3P is the largest development organization in its field. And through effective knowledge sharing we ensure that our capabilities are optimally utilized.
Developing exciting solutions
The products and solutions we develop all aim at making transport more efficient. Today, and even more so in the future, cost per ton kilometre is not, and will not be, the best measure of efficiency. Instead an efficient transport solution is a sustainable one.

Sophisticated safety systems, enhanced energy efficiency, fuel-saving features and transport management systems are all examples of technologies that Volvo 3P has developed to promote sustainable mobility. We have also actively contributed to developing hybrid technology, quiet trucks for urban areas and engines for alternative fuels.

Focused on the future
An increasing focus is put on developing value-adding services. These typically combine technologies from many different sources in order to deliver sophisticated and customized services to vehicle drivers, fleet owners and other customer groups.

We design and develop tomorrow’s transport solutions. Much of our research aims at meeting the requirements that will be imposed by customers and society 5–10 years from now.

Collaboration within and outside of the Group
We work together with Volvo Powertrain, Volvo Technology and other Volvo Group Business Units and provide expertise in key areas.

Also, we collaborate with universities, research centres and industry partners to assess and develop new technologies and concepts. Read more under Key collaborations.

Moreover, we create long-term savings for the Group through strategic collaboration with suppliers.

Sited to support the Group
Volvo 3P is located all over the world, which essentially corresponds to the locations where the truck brands are present.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE SHORTAGE OF WOMEN ENGINEERS

As I search for engineers; industrial, mechanical and electrical I find that men still dominate the industry. Trying to find qualifed talent no matter the gender is difficult in itself, but for those that are promoting diversity in their organization and focused on balancing the talent pool either direction is a challenge.

Check out this interesting article that I found posted on ASME's website.

At a time when American industry can’t find enough homegrown engineers, engineering schools are seeing their student populations decline. Empty chairs mean that the schools are not graduating the numbers of qualified engineers that U.S. companies so desperately need.

Some observers believe that convincing more women to enter engineering is one answer, but women have been slow to enter engineering and even slower mechanical engineering. According to the American Society of Engineering Education, women account for only about 20 percent of engineering degrees. One reason women may choose a different path is the difficulties they face in being hired by universities and then in getting promoted. A study jointly sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering found that only in the social, behavioral, and life sciences is the percentage of women faculty at leading research institutions in the double digits.

Engineering organizations, universities and some companies are working hard to change that. Cheryl Knobloch, associate director of Women in Engineering at Pennsylvania State University, believes that involving parents is critical. She began to see positive results of Penn State's one-week summer engineering camp for high school girls when parents were included in the experience. "Most are completely unaware of engineering opportunities for women," she says.

Rebecca Cohl is a Lockheed Martin engineer who works with her company's outreach programs to encourage girls to consider engineering. Girls’ consideration about their life work is vastly different from boys, she says. Girls need to know their work has value beyond being a well-paying job, Knobloch says. A career in teaching or medicine is much more obvious, she says. "There is somewhat of a mystery about what we do." She adds that when girls are shown that math and science can give them an opportunity to make a difference to people, they choose engineering readily.

Patricia Daniels, associate dean of the College of Science & Engineering at Seattle University, believes that engineers could do a better job themselves of being spokespeople for their profession. For many engineers, once they have solved a problem, they think the results speak for themselves, she says. The ways an ME gets involved with solving problems with fuel cells or sustainable energy are critical and relevant. And without engineers, there would be no iPods, bicycles, school buses, backpacks, or even Hershey's Kisses.

"We don't talk enough about the benefits of what engineers accomplish," says Michael Gibbons, director of data research for the American Society of Engineering Education. The society has seen the percentage of women students at the graduate level increase in the double digits recently but undergraduate numbers are down close to 20 percent.

Says Daniels, "Engineers love their work so much they can't imagine others not wanting to do the same." She is among other women engineers in influential positions at universities taking action. She is encouraging recent graduates to return to the classroom as mentors and teachers, and she is hiring more women faculty, which account for 40 percent in her engineering school. California Polytechnic State University, another school recruiting women through one of the largest chapters of the Women in Engineering program, has an engineering faculty composed of one-third women.

Among other efforts to attract women is the Extraordinary Women Engineers Project Coalition, a motivational group supported by professional societies, ASME, universities, and other organizations. One of the coalition’s studies found that more than 90% of high school girls are not even given the chance to consider engineering as a career choice.

Another program is the Women in Engineering ProActive Network project "Faculty for the Future" in cooperation with Penn State. Funded by General Electric, there is an online career center for female and minority engineering faculty and a mentoring program. Even the Girl Scouts are contributing. A program for 14-to-20-year-olds has 142 Explorer posts and mentors 4,000 members.
